Forbes Top Charities List 2019

According to Forbes’ recently published list of America’s top charities, the biggest players received total donations worth $51.5 billion. Representing a 5% increase from the previous year, the total represents 12% of total charitable contributions, which number $427.7 billion. Forbes’ rankings are determined by private donations made in the latest fiscal period. Thus, the list compilers point out that the list is based on a quantitative, and not qualitative, approach. America’s Top Charities 2019

United Way Worldwide

The domestic needs charity received private donations worth $3.3 billion. Forbes rated its fundraising efficiency at 90% and its charitable commitment at 85%.

Feeding America

The hunger relief organisation received private donations worth $2.8 billion. For both fundraising efficiency and charitable commitment, Forbes scored the charity 99%.

Task Force for Global Health

The international health charity received $2.6 billion in private donations. Forbes gave full marks to the charity’s fundraising efficiency and charitable commitment, scoring them both 100%.

Salvation Army

Founded in London in 1865, the Salvation Army has grown into a major international player. In 2019, it received $2 billion in private donations and received a 87% rating for fundraising efficiency and 82% for charitable commitment.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The Tennessee-based charity received $1.7 billion in private donations, while being rated 85% for fundraising efficiency and 90% for charitable commitment by Forbes.

American National Red Cross

Supporting disaster-stricken people, the Red Cross received private donations worth $1.5 billion. Forbes’ list scored its fundraising efficiency 87% and charitable commitment 90%.

Direct Relief

A major player in international disaster relief efforts, Direct Relief received private donations worth $1.4 billion. According to Forbes’ list, the charity was rated 100% for fundraising efficiency and 99% for charitable commitment.
