Mental Health Awareness in UK

Mental Health Services

According to the Care Quality Commission (CQC), services across the UK have lowered in standards as people are struggling to reach help for issues surrounding mental health. Two deaths at a hospital in Middlesbrough sparked controversy as some of the local trusts have come under fire. Services that are run by the NHS Foundation trust are under scrutiny as a number of deaths have occurred to patients in their care. Just last month, the father of an 18-year-old criticised Tees Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) for her care after she passed away at a hospital nearby Durham. It is suspected that she may have taken her own life.

Due to the awareness and attention given to these issues, inspections have taken place. Responses have shown that the trust “requires improvement”. Various services were shown to be below standard and not sufficient in its resources. Colin Martin, chief executive at TEWV, mentioned that the trust was going to work quickly to improve its care.

Mental Health Foundation

Mental Health Foundation is a UK charity that focuses on providing assistance and information on a national and local scale to all organisations. It campaigns for good mental health for all parties and relies on grant funding and donations to carry out all of its services.

The emphasis on prevention is key for this charity as they want to help minimise the development of any ongoing mental health issues. The foundation provides ways to access more information and show people the steps they can take to reduce mental health risks and solidify their resilience. The mission is to help people protect, understand and sustain their mental health.

Mental health awareness is vital for the UK as these problems need to be reiterated. The local and national authorities should have more schemes in place which help support any platforms bolster up people suffering from any sort of mental illness. A lot of people suffer, and it is easily preventable if more adequate systems are put in place to support victims.
